Working out what a wedding actually costs — and where your money should go — is the first real step in planning. Use the free calculator below to see how a budget splits across every category, adjust it to your own numbers, and get a realistic per-guest figure. Underneath, you'll find a full guide to 2026 UK costs, venue types, and where to save without cutting anything you'll miss.
The average UK wedding costs £20,604 in 2026 (Bridebook's UK Wedding Report), which works out at roughly £278 per guest. But that's a benchmark, not a target — a quarter of couples spend £10,000 or less. Pop your own budget into the calculator to see how it breaks down.

What the Average UK Wedding Costs in 2026
The average has stayed remarkably steady — £20,775 in 2024, £20,822 in 2025, and £20,604 in 2026. Couples aren't spending less so much as spending more deliberately: trimming guest lists, choosing off-peak dates, and putting money where it matters most to them. A quarter spend £10,000 or under, while around a quarter go past £26,000.
How to Split Your Wedding Budget
The calculator uses the category shares below, based on Bridebook's 2026 data. Over half of a typical budget goes on the venue and food alone, so that's where most of your planning attention (and negotiating energy) belongs:
- Venue & catering — 50%. The single biggest cost by a wide margin. Whether it's bundled into an all-inclusive package makes a huge difference to the final figure.
- Attire & beauty — 15%. Dress, suits, accessories, hair and make-up for the couple and wedding party.
- Photography & videography — 10%. The part couples most often say they're glad they didn't skimp on.
- Flowers & décor — 7% and entertainment & music — 7%.
- Rings, cake, stationery, transport and a contingency buffer make up the rest.
Treat these as a sensible starting frame, then shift the percentages towards whatever matters most to you.
Venue Costs and Types
The venue is typically the largest single item — roughly a third of the total on its own, with catering on top. In 2026 the average venue hire excluding catering is around £6,040. Costs swing widely by type and region: London sits well above the national average, while the North West, Wales and Northern Ireland fall below it.
Barns have overtaken hotels as the most-booked setting, followed by hotels and country houses. For a fuller picture, see our guides to outdoor venues, quirky venues and castle venues, and our detailed wedding budget planner for a category-by-category breakdown.
Where to Save Without Cutting the Day
The biggest savings come from the biggest categories, so protect the experience and trim smartly:
- Move the date. A weekday or winter wedding can cut venue and catering costs substantially — January is typically the cheapest month, June and August the priciest.
- Trim the guest list. Every 10–20 fewer guests saves across food, drink, furniture and stationery at once.
- Rethink the cake. A traditional wedding cake averages £360 and does one job. A cheese wedding cake from £110 doubles as your evening food, doing two jobs on one line of the budget — toggle it in the calculator to see the difference.
- Repurpose flowers from ceremony to reception rather than buying twice.
Catering: Cost Per Head
Catering is the largest part of the venue-and-food category. A three-course wedding breakfast with drinks typically runs £35–£70 per guest for a buffet or plated service, with premium and London menus higher. Evening food — a hog roast, pizza or grazing station — usually adds £6–£15 per head for your evening guests. Because it scales directly with numbers, your guest count is the lever that moves this figure most.
The Cheese Wedding Cake Alternative
A cheese wedding cake swaps tiers of sponge and icing for stacked wheels of British and European artisan cheese — a striking centrepiece that also feeds your guests. It's become a popular, cost-effective choice, and it earns its place on the budget twice: as the cake and as your evening cheese course.
Our range covers 23 designs from £110 to £340, serving 25 to 200 guests, built from a choice of more than 150 cheeses. A £60 deposit secures your order, with the balance due nearer the day, and we deliver chilled across mainland UK ahead of the wedding. Order at least four weeks in advance, and earlier for peak season (May–September). Browse the full collection here.
Wedding Cost FAQs
How much does the average UK wedding cost in 2026?
£20,604 according to Bridebook's 2026 UK Wedding Report, covering the wedding day and excluding the honeymoon and engagement ring. Hitched's 2026 report puts it slightly higher at £21,990 — the difference is mainly what each report counts.
What's the biggest wedding cost?
The venue and catering, which together account for more than half of the average budget.
How much should I budget per guest?
Around £278 per head on average, though smaller weddings work out higher per guest because fixed costs are shared across fewer people.
How can I cut costs the most?
Move to a weekday or off-peak date and trim the guest list — those two levers move the total more than anything else.
The Bottom Line
The £20,604 average is a signpost, not a finish line — couples create beautiful days for £5,000 and for £35,000. Use the calculator to set your own number, fix your priorities early, track estimated against actual as you book, and keep a buffer for surprises. Get those right and you'll plan a day that feels like yours, without the post-wedding financial hangover.
